Texting can be better than a phone call

Let’s take a detour away from code for a bit. Don’t worry I’ll stick close to technology. Let’s talk mobile phones. I enjoy sending text messages. Texting as all the cool kids say. We could call it what it is, a basic phone to phone instant message. In my opinion texting it is THE killer  communications app for great unwashed technophobic masses flittering here and there away from PCs, away from technology. People who are just being outsideliving their lives. The trouble is people age 25 and older usualy don’t know how to do it. It is easy and T9 is your friend. I’ll talk more about the how some other time but for now I’ll stick to the why.

Most people have a mobile phone with them at all times. If I need to give you a piece of information the simplest most non-invasive way to get it to you immediately is to text you. Yes, I could call you but you are busy you are outside you are driving or running or dining and you don’t need to be interrupted, taken out of the moment, to talk loudly in a doctor’s office or create a danger to others on the road just to carry on a conversation filled with mostly small talk and a tiny golden nugget of the information you needed.

Text Scenario

*buzz*

<Alice views at her leisure> “From Kevin: Here is Bob’s number. 512-555-1212 Have fun with your family.”

Voice Scenario

*ring*

Kevin: Hey Alice, how’s it going?

Alice: Good just driving to my Aunt Petunia’s house for some reason or another…

Kevin: Well that’s just great. Hey, you asked me to give you Bob’s number here it is do you have a pen?

Alice: Ok I’ll hang on I’ll write it down.

<Alice reaches over to grab a pencil>

*screech, crash, bang… tragedy*

The counter argument to the second scenario is that voice mail is ubitiquious. While true you will likely be greatly inconvienced by the extra busy work it will take to:

  1. connect to your voice mail
  2. enter your password
  3. listen to the message
  4. try to remember the button to press to delete it
  5. hang up

I for one say good riddence to voice mail. I’d rather read a text while I am outside enjoying my life.
